The redevelopment of Muriwai Skatepark transforms the existing facility into a contemporary skate destination combining flowing concrete transition, technical street terrain and informal skateable spaces extending through the wider Muriwai Village Green. Designed by RICH Landscapes for Auckland Council, the park provides a diverse range of terrain for different riding styles and ability levels.
RICH Landscapes was engaged by Auckland Council to lead the skatepark design for the redevelopment of Muriwai Skatepark, forming part of the wider Muriwai Village Green improvements.
The design creates a varied skate environment combining a flowing transition bowl, dedicated street section and a series of informal skateable spaces extending through the wider reserve. The transition area provides a mix of hips, extensions and interconnected lines, while the street area incorporates ledges, rails, banks and other technical features that can be approached in multiple ways.
Beyond the main concrete skatepark, an open asphalt area provides flexible space for skating alongside skate kerbs and a bank-to-ledge. A wide connection pathway and the basketball court area extend the skateable environment further, incorporating relocated Victoria Park ledges, a long grind wall and pole jam. Together, these areas allow skating to flow beyond the traditional boundaries of the skatepark and create a broader range of opportunities across the site.
A key focus of the design was providing progression for a broad range of users while retaining enough variety and challenge to remain engaging for experienced riders. Features and spaces have been arranged to provide multiple lines and different ways of interpreting the park, supporting skateboarding as well as other wheeled users.
Material and detailing give the park its own identity, with coloured concrete and corten steel elements integrated throughout the skate environment and wider landscape.
FLOW supplied a range of skate features and components for the project, including purpose-built new elements alongside the refurbishment and reuse of existing skate features.
RICH Landscapes provided skatepark design from concept development through detailed design and construction documentation, with ongoing design support and construction observation during delivery.
