Project Details

RICH Landscapes was commissioned by Auckland Council to undertake a comprehensive region-wide audit of 88 skateparks and wheeled play environments throughout Auckland. The project encompassed a wide variety of facilities, ranging from small local skate dots and neighbourhood skate spaces through to large regional skateparks and destination wheeled recreation environments.

The purpose of the project was to provide Auckland Council with a clear understanding of the current condition, functionality and future renewal requirements of its skatepark network. The audits were designed to support long-term asset management planning, improve maintenance prioritisation, and assist with future investment decisions across the region’s growing wheeled recreation infrastructure.

RICH Landscapes carried out detailed on-site assessments of each facility, documenting the condition of concrete surfaces, coping, joints, drainage, structural elements, transitions and surrounding infrastructure. Particular attention was given to identifying defects such as cracking, surface deterioration, pooling water, subsidence, edge failures and wear associated with ageing skatepark infrastructure. Each audit also reviewed the functionality and usability of the skatepark, including the arrangement of features, circulation and rider flow, safety considerations and opportunities for future improvement.

As part of the project, RICH Landscapes developed a streamlined process for recording site information, photographs and audit findings consistently across all 88 facilities. The information gathered during the site assessments was compiled into a centralised planning document that enabled Auckland Council to better understand asset condition, maintenance priorities and future renewal requirements across its skatepark network.

Each audit produced a detailed report containing condition assessment plans, feature and flow diagrams, photographic documentation and prioritised recommendations for maintenance, health and safety improvements, resurfacing works and long-term redevelopment opportunities. Indicative cost estimates were also provided to assist Council with future budgeting and asset lifecycle planning.

The completed project delivered Auckland Council a comprehensive snapshot of the condition and performance of its wheeled play network, while also establishing a robust framework for the ongoing management and future development of skateparks and wheeled recreation facilities across Auckland.
